Compatible Toner Questions (We've Got the Answers)

There are moments of confusion when using remanufactured toner cartridges.

It raises many compatible toner questions.

Well...

It's not exactly the most thrilling set of questions we've answered. But, they are ones that matter:

  • What compatible toner is
  • What toner has to offer
  • What to expect when using it

Here's what you should know about the products you're finding on our website.

Q: What is compatible toner?

Compatible toner is a type of toner manufactured by a third party.

Toner is a powder, used in printers,  burnt onto a page to give you the printed result.

In the case of compatible toner -- it’s manufactured to match the quality output provided by original (OEM) toner cartridges.

Q: Can it void my warranty?

This may be one of your first questions after the basics.

It’s easy to assume that by using third-party toner you’re at risk of voiding your printer’s warranty.

This is a NO.

Due to the Magnuson-Moss Warranty Act of 1975, you are able to use compatible items with the original because it prevents companies from creating a monopoly through “tie-in” parts (essentially). It's the same law that allows you to use aftermarket parts when fixing your car.

Q: Why does the packaging look different?

You will notice that most compatible toner labeling will not carry the same design as the originals.

This comes down to the copyright of the brand names and images.

It may not have the same look but it certainly offers the equivalent quality.

Q: Why is it inexpensive?

Because third-party suppliers, manufacturers, and distributors make a smaller segment of the printing supplies market (around 25%).

There is less of a stronghold” by the big players.

The major brands are able to set higher prices because of their position. They produce the printers and dictate the price of the printing supplies.

We, on the other hand, do not have the same overhead and, instead, can pass on savings to you.

Q: Which types of machines is it available?

Compatible toner is available for a variety of machines -- such as:

  • Fax machines
  • Laser printers
  • Copiers

There are also compatible versions for MICR toner which is used to print checks.

Q: What is the quality like?

The toner will vary depending on the sources.

There are variables (like any product on the market) that contribute to its quality.

This may include the business that does the manufacturing

Or:

How it’s packaged in something such as a refill kit or compatible cartridge.

Q: Why does it sometimes give me a “lighter” print?

Toner can often clump inside the cartridge (or bottle if you are using a refill kit).

This means the cartridge and printer are not receiving the correct amount to produce an even distribution.

This is usually fixed by taking the cartridge out, rocking it back and forth a few times, and reinstalling it.

Q: Why do I sometimes see lines or spotting?

There are times when residue gets onto the cartridge roller (or in the printer) which prevents the toner from being applied evenly.

Sometimes you can fix this by wiping the area clean.

But:

The best option is to replace the imaging drum (if your cartridge uses one).

Q: Does it give an advantage over original (OEM) supplies?

Quite often it does.

Compatible toner will cost you far less than purchasing from big box retailers.

Cartridges filled with this toner also help extend the life of the cartridge -- this means less waste to the landfills.

There are times when the print quality is often higher than that from the original supplies, too.
